SNL-employed comedy trio The Lonely Island have set May 10 as the release date for their new album Turtleneck & Chain. As the follow-up to 2009’s Incredibad, this record will follow the same formula, featuring a healthy dose of pop-star cameos and combining new material with songs created for SNL’s Digital Shorts. The group (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, actor and writers for SNL, respectively) released a video for the first track off the album (embedded below, NSFW), and it doesn’t disappoint.
Thank god they’ve been able to continue their independent comedy projects since being snatched up by SNL. But as a longtime fan of The Dudes, this is bittersweet news for me. While I find it damn near impossible to not laugh at and admire their impeccable talent for parodying every nuance of almost every hip-hop and R&B sub-genre of the last 25 years, I also now have to brace myself for another wave of vodka and Red Bull-infused idiots, who are not quite in on the entire joke, spilling their drinks in excitement when the bar or club DJ plays their latest single to feature a sh*tty rapper cameo. “OH MY GAWD, BRO, DIDJA HEAR DA PART WHERE T-PAIN SAYS HE F*CKED A MERMAID?! THAT SH*T IS HILARIOUS, MAN! I WOULD TOTALLY SMASH DAT FISH ASS, TOO!”
And for good measure, two brilliant (and NSFW) songs that they wrote before their SNL fame…
